Shoe-string Adventures – Next Stop: Langkawi

By Aliza

We have just returned from Langkawi late October 2008. We were on a very tight budget but still had loads of fun.

Stayed at one of the motels on Pantai Cenang. Excellent location, so many restaurants surrounding that area, shops too and within walking distance to Underwater World. The best thing about the motel is that it is right smack on the beach. Food is cheap around Pantai Cenang, Langkawi town and along the road amongst the kampungs. A bowl of mee hoon RM2.50 (mee hoon soup pak teh slurp slurp. Another must have is of course laksa, only RM2.00 per bowl! Ikan bakar pak tam also excellent less than RM100 for family of 6 persons. Rent a car to get around Langkawi, as cheap as RM50 for a Kancil. If you have a bit extra cash, have a meal at the Loaf (Tun Mahathir’s outlet), food is good abit pricey, fantastic view though of Telaga Harbour Park. Signtseeing, Mangrove cruise is a must. Do stop a Handicraft Centre where there is a little museum where you can learn about the Sumpah Mahsuri on Langkawi Island, very interesting. We spent a lot of time on the beach, Pantai Cenang is great as the beach do not have a sudden drop, its not deep at all, so safe for my kids. Water sports activities a bit pricey so use your negotiation power there. Do buy lots of chocolates very cheap and if you like pots and pan, Correlle dinnerware and Vision cooking ware, very very very cheap. Camera is very important as there are hundreds of magnificient location to snap away. Its just stunning. We enjoyed very much and plan to to go back to Langkawi again.

    Langkawi is definitely paradise!

By the way, where in cenang that you get RM 2+ food? Can’t find any few weeks ago.

Tips: During low peak, Wira Auto cost as little as RM 45

Any ‘gulai’ lovers out there do look for ‘gulai Kalut’ there in LGK. The last time I was there his restaurant is nearby the Book Village (if it’s still exist).
