What a sweet, sweet weekend for TeamAirAsia in its inaugural foray in the GP2 series after driver Davide Valsecchi came in third and gave them their first podium finish in Race 1 at the season’s maiden race at the Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi. The next day, the Italian completed the race weekend by placing fourth in the second race which puts the team fourth in the overall standings.

While it was unfortunate for Valsecchi’s team mate Luiz Ruzia who did not manage to rejoin the race after running into the back of a stalled car in the first race, he bounced back in the second race to finish at P16 after starting at the back of the grid.

This is absolutely a brilliant achievement for the newcomers and we at AirAsia are tremendously proud to support the Malaysian team. The accomplishment of the team is in line with AirAsia’s belief in ‘Dreaming the impossible and believing the unbelievable whilst never
taking no for an answer’.

Most would have thought that it would be impossible for a young team like TeamAirAsia to achieve such results but they proved the sceptics wrong.

Hats off to Riad Asmat, the Team Principal who worked very hard in putting the team together in just four months. Technical Director Mike Gascoyne’s years of experience in motorsports proved to be an added advantage to the newbies.

Like any other team, it would be ideal for TeamAirAsia to win as many races as possible. However, it’s not only about winning. At AirAsia we strive towards people development and ensure that all their talents do not go to waste and the GP2 is a great avenue for young drivers like Valsecchi and Ruzia to develop their talents. Maybe one day, we will get to see these two drivers in action in Formula 1 races.
